The Golden Temple - Amritsar
A few days ago, we arrived in Amritsar, India. This is the home of the Golden Temple, the spiritual heart of the Sikh religion. The chaos and smells of India assault the senses but the temple is a beautiful sight and worth the journey.
The primary source of fuel for cooking consists of wood and sun dried dung. When this city of over a million inhabitants wakes up to make breakfast, the whole region smells like camping.
The Golden Temple offers up free meals for anyone who chooses to visit so we had a good look at the food preparation. Wood fires, hand peeled garlic, cauldrons, and a fancy chapati making machine were all featured.
