The Columnar Basalt Concert Hall

Harpa is the Reykjavík concert hall. The glass exterior was inspired by the basalt cliffs along coast of Iceland. Lots of glass hexagons with a few splashes of purple and yellow mixed in. Its a stunning building inside and out. At night a the walls of Harpa light up in a variety of patterns. What really impressed me was that the floor tiles are made of basalt. More specifically pillow basalts which are formed when lava flows into the sea. Many of the tiles slice through these basaltic pillows so that makes Harpa pretty special. A building  that is both inspired and made from nature.
