10,000 Hours in Rock and Roll

One of the more popular books this year was Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers: The Story of Success

You know a book is really taking off when it sparks broad discussion. One of the more popular discussion points of Gladwell's latest book was that it takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. He uses the Beatles as an example as they put in long hours in Hamburg (guess how many) before they broke big in the USA. The Lefsetz Letter suggested that much of the pop music released today was crap precisely because the artists hadn't paid their dues. They haven't put in their "Hamburg time".

Bob Lefsetz's blog is read by some pretty important musicians as evidenced by the fact that people like Eric Carmen and Al Kooper are writing to him about the 10,000 hours concept. Read what rock and roll musicians think about the 10,000 hours in the Lefsetz Letter Mailbag.
