Natural Gas Flames at Darvaza

My friend, Hugh Reid, sent me a slideshow of an interesting geological feature in Turkmenistan. The crater appears to be the result of a well blowout in the 1950's. Given that methane is a greenhouse gas, there must be a pile of cash somewhere waiting to extinguish and cap this fiery crater.

There's obviously a significant source of natural gas in Central Turkmenistan, but not too many people around to take advantage of it.
