Copper Mine Mystery Solved

Last week when flying to Los Cabos I had a great view of the Grand Canyon and an unidentified copper mine. I was curious as to the specifics as there are many open pit copper mines in the southern USA (if you don't believe me check out Google Earth in Arizona). The in flight tracker map uses an airplane icon that is 200km + long so it was almost impossible to figure out exactly where this mine was. I had given up hope until today when I was reading about BHP's worldwide layoffs which included 550 people out of work at the Pinto Valley copper mine. Although that wasn't the one, a bit of time on Google Earth narrowed it down to theĀ Asarco Mission Mine.

It turns out they offer bus tours. The best gift ever for the geologist in your family!
