The quote below illustrates some slippery reasoning coming from the camp in favor of an abiotic origin for petroleum. Geochemists across the globe must be cringing at the mention of “rotting forests” being converted into oil. Oil has all kinds of biological markers within it that make a pretty strong case for a biotic origin.
