Not Seeing Stars

Coalbed methane development in Central Alberta has run into its fair share of opposition. This recent article quotes one landowner’s view:

I hate EnCana. I can’t see the stars anymore.

Did Encana purchase Mr Burns’ sun blocker? These types of environmental articles often quote the most vocal minority in order to draw attention to an issue. Background data is usually missing making it difficult to evaluate whether the claims are true or not. There are many instances of gassy water wells in Central Alberta that were present before any oil and gas activity took place. Natural fluctuations in groundwater levels will impact water quality and the amount of exsolved gas. Pointing figures is easy, determining what is really happening takes more effort and is far less sensational.
