How Do You Debase Base Metals?

As the prices of nickel, copper and zinc rise, the business of coining money becomes a losing proposition. Specifically, the US Mint is losing money by making pennys and nickels and they are looking to find a cheaper material to manufacture their coins with.

Paul Kedrosky is cheekily suggesting a return to the wooden nickel.
